چکیده

An exact solution to the barotropic potential vorticity equation is used to examine the properties of barotropic vortices under arbitrary nth-order hyper-diffusivity. Analytical expressions are derived for an eddy’s lifetime, meridional drift, decay in size, and energy, as functions of the Coriolis parameter, order and magnitude of diffusivity, and the eddy’s size, shape and strength. These expressions provide a simple explanation for many observed features of oceanic and atmospheric vortices. For example, the competition between the Coriolis effect and eddy strength in giving permitted eddy geometries; the bias towards a zonal anisotropy for large vortices but not for small ones; energetic preference for axisymmetry; poleward meridional drift of cyclonic vortices; and meridional speed variation depending on eddy geometry and strength.

Eddy-mean-flow interaction in a barotropic ocean model

The role of eddies in the maintenance of idealized, antisymmetrically forced double gyres is studied using a barotropic ocean circulation model. A diagnosis in terms of q , the quasi-conserved absolute vorticity , enables an understanding of the effect of the eddies on the time-mean flow. The unstable model Gulf Stream, partitioning counter-rotating gyres, is the confluence region where q conto...

The Madden–Julian Oscillation, Barotropic Dynamics, and North Pacific Tropical Cyclone Formation. Part II: Stochastic Barotropic Modeling

A stochastic barotropic model linearized about the 850-mb flow is used to investigate the relationship between wind variations associated with the Madden–Julian oscillation (MJO) and eddy kinetic energy variations in the Tropics. Such a model is successful in predicting the observed location of eddy kinetic energy maxima during the westerly phase of the MJO and the suppression of eddy activity ...

A contribution to approximate analytical evaluation of Fourier series via an Applied Analysis standpoint; an application in turbulence spectrum of eddies

In the present paper, we shall attempt to make a contribution to approximate analytical evaluation of the harmonic decomposition of an arbitrary continuous function. The basic assumption is that the class of functions that we investigate here, except the verification of Dirichlet's principles, is concurrently able to be expanded in Taylor's representation, over a particular interval of their do...

Diffusive draining and growth of eddies

The diffusive effect on barotropic models of mesoscale eddies is addressed, using the Melnikov method from dynamical systems. Simple geometric criteria are obtained, which identify whether a given eddy grows or drains out, under a diffusive (and forcing) perturbation on a potential vorticity conserving flow. Qualitatively, the following are shown to be features conducive to eddy growth (and, th...

Formulation and implementation of a ‘‘residual-mean’’ ocean circulation model

A parameterization of mesoscale eddies in coarse-resolution ocean general circulation models (GCM) is formulated and implemented using a residual-mean formalism. In that framework, mean buoyancy is advected by the residual velocity (the sum of the Eulerian and eddy-induced velocities) and modified by a residual flux which accounts for the diabatic effects of mesoscale eddies. The residual veloc...
